Once upon a time we just designed stuff, then figured out how to get it to work, and naively thought that this was what engineers did for a living.
But today, we all know that it's not design, what we really do is called Systems Engineering. Perhaps I'm getting cynical as I get older, but it seems to me that what used to be just putting stuff together has become some kind of semi-academic Higher Purpose. It seems that Systems Engineers no longer have to get their stuff to work - that's now the task of Systems Integrators and of Testers. It must be much easier to design stuff if you don't have to worry too much about whether it works or not.
